What Kind Of Vegetarian Traveller Are You? (Vegetarian Diet And Its Types) Last Updated: February 14, 2022
Travelling as a vegetarian is not always straightforward. Some countries consider fish as a part of the vegetarian diet. A lot of countries treat eggs as vegetarian and to a certain part, it is.
Let’s dig deep into the types of vegetarians that exist in this world.
To begin with, I am a Lacto-vegetarian. Quite often, I am asked if I eat eggs. The answer is no. I don’t but in all honesty, I do cheat sometimes. In desserts.
For someone with a major sweet tooth, it is hard for me to resist trying out desserts. What I do is, I don’t ask if the dessert contains egg or not. Ignorance is bliss here. I know there are plenty who wouldn’t agree to this. It is my weakness and I am working on it.”
So what is Lacto-vegetarian exactly?
A Lacto-vegetarian diet excludes eggs, meat, poultry, fish and other kinds of seafood. But it does include dairy products like milk, butter, yoghurt and cheese.
Other types of vegetarian diets include:
Ovo-vegetarian
This diet includes eggs but excludes metal, poultry, dairy products, fish and other kinds of seafood.
Lacto-Ovo vegetarian
This one is the same as a Lacto-vegetarian diet. The only difference is that it includes eggs.
Pescatarian
The exclusions in this diet are meat, poultry, dairy, and eggs. But fish is allowed.
Vegan
All foods that contain dairy, meat, poultry, eggs, fish and other kinds of seafood are excluded from this diet. Veganism is becoming more and more popular all around the world. In fact, I have been thinking of slowly turning vegan too or at least cutting down on dairy consumption.
While travelling it is important to keep in mind and be aware of the different types of vegetarian diets that exist. Not all countries follow the same diets.
It is always recommended to double-check the ingredients before ordering a meal in a foreign country. Now that you know the different types of vegetarian types, you will be able to understand why some countries believe that fish and eggs are considered vegetarian.
