Top Things To Do In Edinburgh [Free+ Paid] Last Updated: September 12, 2024

Previously, we explored the top things to do in London and discussed some great experiences. Today, we’ll dive into a few things you can do in Edinburgh, both free and paid. Let’s start with the free ones.

Free Things To Do In Edinburgh

1. Harry Potter Walking Tour

First up is the Harry Potter Walking Tour. This tour is available both as a paid and free option, but why pay when you can enjoy it for free? On this walking tour, you’ll explore popular places featured in the Harry Potter movies and books, and it’s completely free. This is the FREE tour I recommend. Please tip the guide at the end of the tour. Tip amount can be of your choice.

Some highlights of the tour include hearing about the biggest movie premiere in British history from your guide, visiting J.K. Rowling’s favourite street shops and squares in London, and discovering where you can find Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, Chocolate Frogs, or even Dumbledore’s favourite treats.

The tours range from two to seven hours, so you can choose what works best for you. However, it’s important to book in advance to receive full meeting point details via email and ensure a smooth experience. Booking is free, quick, and easy.

While the tour itself is free, the guides rely on tips to support their livelihood. Contributing a fair amount not only supports them but also shows your appreciation for their expertise and dedication.

2. Try Scottish Fudge From The Fudge Kitchen

The next up we have on the list is trying Scottish fudge from The Fudge Kitchen. If you’re a fudge lover, this place is heaven. The Fudge House offers around 27 fabulous flavours, all handmade. From classic creamy vanilla and sophisticated dark chocolate to fruity strawberry and authentic Italian nougat, their fudge is crafted using a traditional recipe—and they truly excel at it.

Each flavour is unique, yet none are overpowering. With every bite, you get that standard high-quality fudge taste. The shop is spotless, and I love how there’s an open kitchen where you can watch the fudge being made. This is another great free experience you definitely shouldn’t miss.

3. Explore Edinburgh Old Town

If you’re up for something truly special, I highly recommend exploring Edinburgh’s oldest neighbourhood. Stepping into this area feels like you’ve travelled back to medieval times. The narrow, cobbled streets are lined with wool shops, cosy pubs, and countless historical monuments. While today you’ll mostly find visitors, tartan filled souvenir shops, and pipers, the charm of this place is undeniable. In harry potter souvenir shops, you’ll find enchanting Harry Potter souvenir shops filled with magical merchandise, from wands and house scarves to spellbinding books. It’s the perfect place to explore and bring home a piece of the wizarding world.

4. Edinburgh Royal Mile Walk

Royal Mile

Next up, you absolutely must explore Edinburgh’s iconic ‘Royal Mile,’ one of Britain’s most famous streets that draws visitors from all over the globe.

This walk takes you from the historic Edinburgh Castle to the sleek, modern Scottish Parliament, showcasing how the city evolved from a dormant volcano into the vibrant metropolis it is today. As you stroll along the Mile, you’ll uncover a treasure trove of history and stories that make this city so unique.

5. National Museum Of Scotland

Just a short walk from the Royal Mile and you’ll be there. It’s easily one of the best museums in the city, offering a fascinating journey through Scottish history and culture.

The National Museum of Scotland has something for everyone—from the world’s first cloned animal, Dolly the Sheep, to an enormous T-Rex skeleton, and even the world-famous medieval chess pieces that might remind you of a certain wizarding world. You’ll also find ancient Scottish artifacts dating back to the Palaeolithic era.

The best part? The museum is completely free to enter. Whether you have a few hours or an entire day, there’s plenty to explore. It’s also a great option for families, with plenty of exhibits that younger kids will enjoy, and a café on the first-level balcony that serves delicious coffee, cake, and light bites (though I’d suggest skipping the downstairs restaurant).

For a well-rounded day, consider pairing your visit with nearby attractions like Victoria Street, the Royal Mile, Grassmarket, Greyfriars Bobby, or the Meadows. The museum is located on Chambers Street, right in the heart of the Old Town, making it an easy and rewarding stop on your Edinburgh adventure.

6. Walk Around Dean Village

Dean Village is a charming spot just 20 minutes away. Enjoy a peaceful stroll along the river with lovely views of historic buildings and lush greenery. It’s less crowded than the city center, offering a quiet retreat. The walk there is scenic, and while there’s not much else to do, the tranquility makes it worth a visit. Perfect for a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh.

Paid Things To Do In Edinburgh

1. Edinburgh Castle

This place is a must-see! I’d recommend taking a guided tour of Edinburgh Castle to get the full experience. You’ll hear fascinating stories about the castle’s royal residents, like Mary Queen of Scots, and dive into the rich history of the place.

After the tour, you’ll have plenty of time to explore on your own. The castle’s grounds are packed with interesting spots, including three museums, two old prisons, a canine cemetery, the Chapel of Saint Margaret, the National Monument to Scotland’s fallen, the Great Hall, and even a Royal Palace. It’s a place where you can easily spend hours soaking in history and stunning views of the city.

Book your tickets here with a guided tour.

2. Whiskey Tasting Experience

Next up is whiskey tasting, a must-try experience if you’re into alcohol. There are plenty of options available online, so you can find something that fits your budget and preferences. You’ll be taken on a tasting journey, and you can choose between joining a large or small group—though I’d recommend going with a small group to savour the experience.

The Johnny Walker Whisky Tasting Experience is a must-try. It’s one of the best, giving you a personalized journey through the flavours of Scotland right in the heart of Edinburgh. Over 2-3 hours, you’ll savour world-class cocktails with stunning views of Edinburgh Castle from their 1820 rooftop bar, all while enjoying some of their finest whisky. If you’re in town, this is an experience you definitely shouldn’t miss.

3. World Of Illusions

Finally, make sure to visit Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, Scotland’s oldest attraction since 1835. It’s filled with over 100 interactive illusions across five floors, including the vortex tunnel, mirror maze, and the historic Camera Obscura. Don’t miss the stunning 360-degree views of Edinburgh from the Rooftop Terrace. It’s fun for all ages, and the views alone are worth it.

And that’s a wrap on our blog! I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. If you’d like a personalized itinerary for your Edinburgh trip, feel free to reach out to me at theveggietravels@gmail.com. I’d be happy to help!
