Getting to San Marino from Milan

San Marino doesn’t have its own airport or train station, so the closest place you’ll need to reach first is Rimini, an Italian city about 10 km away from San Marino. From there, you can take a bus or drive across the border. Here’s how to get there easily:

By Train + Bus

Train to San Marino
  1. Train from Milan to Rimini – Take a train from Milano Centrale to Rimini. High-speed trains (Frecciarossa) take about 2.5–3 hours, while regional trains take longer (around 6 hours). Booking in advance can get you a better price.
  2. Bus from Rimini to San Marino – Once you arrive at Rimini Train Station, you’ll need to take Bus #72 to San Marino. The bus stop isn’t immediately obvious — walk about two minutes down the road to Hotel Napoleon, where the bus departs every hour. The journey takes around 50 minutes.

What to Do in San Marino for a Day

Since it’s a small place, one day is enough to soak it all in. Here’s how to spend your time:

  • Take the cable car up – There’s a cable car (Funivia) that takes you from Borgo Maggiore to the main town. It’s a short ride, but the view is pretty great.
  • Walk around the old town – The streets are narrow, the buildings look straight out of a movie, and every corner has something interesting. No maps needed, just wander.
  • Visit the Three Towers – These are the main landmarks, and they sit right on the cliffs. You can go inside Guaita and Cesta, but Montale is closed to visitors. The views are unreal.
  • Grab a coffee at Piazza della Libertà – This is the main square, and it’s a great spot to just sit, relax, and take it all in.
  • Try local food – If you have a sweet tooth, get a slice of Torta Tre Monti, it’s a crispy, chocolatey layered cake that’s famous here.

A Few Quick Tips

  • They use Euros (€), and cards work everywhere.
  • Italian is the official language, but English is fine in touristy areas.
  • If you like collecting stamps or coins, San Marino has some cool ones. It’s also known for duty-free shopping.

It’s an easy, refreshing day trip from Milan. If you’re up for a relaxed day, a little history, and some amazing views, this one’s a no-brainer.
