Exploring The Drive Through Scottish Highlands Last Updated: September 29, 2024

If you’re planning a trip to Scotland, a drive through the Scottish Highlands is an experience you
can’t miss. From rolling hills and serene lochs to dramatic cliffs and ancient landscapes, this
route offers some of the most breathtaking scenery you’ll ever witness. Starting from Edinburgh,
make your way through the Highlands to Glasgow. Or extend your journey to the Isle of Skye.
Every mile is filled with stunning views and hidden gems.

The Journey Begins: Edinburgh to Glasgow via the Highlands

Loch Lomond

Leaving Edinburgh, your first destination should be Loch Lomond. It’s one of Scotland’s most
iconic lakes. The peaceful waters, framed by towering hills, offer the perfect stop to stretch your
legs. Take in the fresh Highland air. From here, the real adventure begins.

As you head deeper into the Highlands, you’ll reach Glencoe. This dramatic valley is a true
highlight of the journey. Steep mountains rise on either side, and waterfalls cascade down their
slopes. The landscape here feels almost otherworldly. It’s easy to see why Glencoe is often
used as a backdrop in films. This is a place where the beauty of nature truly takes over.

Fort William and Ben Nevis

Continue north, and you’ll pass through Fort William. It’s a charming town that sits at the foot of
Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. Whether you’re up for a hike or just a quick stop in town,
Fort William offers a great break. The views of Ben Nevis are spectacular, even from a distance.
The surrounding area is full of walking trails and scenic spots.

The Isle of Skye

The highlight of this journey is undoubtedly the Isle of Skye. Once you cross the Skye Bridge,
the island unfolds before you like something from a fairytale. Rugged landscapes, dramatic
coastlines, and towering cliffs make Skye a unique destination. A must-see on the island is the
famous Old Man of Storr. This striking rock formation towers over the landscape. The hike to
the top offers panoramic views. It’s well worth the effort.

Fairy Pools

Another magical spot on Skye is the Fairy Pools, located at the foot of the Black Cuillin
Mountains. These crystal-clear pools are famous for their beauty. While the water is icy cold,
dipping into the Fairy Pools is something you won’t forget.

Portree

No trip to Skye is complete without a visit to Portree, the island’s main town. With its colorful
waterfront houses and cozy cafes, Portree is the perfect place to relax. Soak in the island’s charm. Whether you stop for lunch or just take a stroll around the harbor, Portree is a great base
to explore the rest of the island.

Wrapping Up the Journey: Back to Glasgow

Glasgow

As you make your way back, consider a detour via Loch Ness. You might even catch a glimpse
of the famous Loch Ness Monster. The drive from the Isle of Skye to Glasgow is just as beautiful
as the journey up. There are more mountains, lochs, and scenic valleys to explore.

Loch Ness

Driving across the Scottish Highlands is truly an unforgettable experience. Every twist and turn
reveals new and stunning landscapes.
