Explore the beautiful country of Liechtenstein in one day from Zurich! Last Updated: January 24, 2022
Liechtenstein is one of the most picturesque Alpine countries in Europe, located less than 2.5 hours away from Zurich.
This mountainous country attracts plenty of tourists each year. Besides the mountain setting, this country is also known for museums, galleries and castles.
And you know what’s the best part? It is only a short train ride away from Zurich!
I spent 3 nights in Zurich and during this time I took a day trip to the capital of Liechtenstein – Vaduz.
It is the smallest capital in Europe and is home to the Liechtenstein Tourism Office.
HOW TO GET TO VADUZ FROM ZURICH BY LOCAL TRANSPORT
There are no direct train connections from Zurich to Vaduz.
You need to take a train from Zurich Main Train Station to Sargans which is a municipality in Switzerland. The train journey takes approximately one hour.
From Sargans, you can take a direct bus to Vaduz. The bus number to take is 12E which goes from Sargans Bahnhof to Vaduz Post Station. The bus journey takes approximately 30 minutes.
You can follow the same route back to Zurich.
Total journey time between Zurich and Vaduz: Approximately 2 to 2.5 hours one way
THINGS TO DO IN THE CAPITAL OF LIECHTENSTEIN (VADUZ)
1. Get a souvenir stamp on your passport at the tourist information centre
The stamp costs EUR 3. It is just like any other country stamp. Usually, you don’t get stamps on your passport while crossing borders in Europe. But if you love collecting souvenirs from each country then this is an ideal choice.
The Tourist Information Centre of Liechtenstein and a few other souvenir shops in Vaduz are authorized to give you a souvenir stamp on your passport.
2. Climb all the way up to the Vaduz Castle
While you can see the castle from pretty much everywhere in Vaduz, you can choose to climb all the way up to the castle to get mesmerizing panoramic views of Vaduz as well.
Unfortunately, I ended up climbing only halfway as I realised I was the only one on that route and as a solo traveller, I didn’t feel 100% safe to go to the top all by myself.

3. Visit the museums and cathedrals
Vaduz is known for its museums and churches.
One of the recommended museums to visit is the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein and the Cathedral of St. Florin
The capital city is so small, you can cover everything in a matter of a couple of hours.
4. Check out the Parliament Building
The Parliament Building was built using more than a million bricks. This is another striking example of the architecture in Liechtenstein.
I visited Vaduz in September when there was a city festival going on. This festival focused on street artists and food trucks from different parts of the world.
It was interesting to see the talent that exists out there.
I wouldn’t recommend spending more than a day exploring Vaduz as it’s a very small city.
