5 Apps That Can Be Useful While Travelling Solo Last Updated: April 4, 2022

Me solo travelling in Slovenia

Do you want to travel solo? Have you been longing to travel somewhere by yourself but didn’t know how to go about it?

Well, then this article is for you.

Solo travelling can be intimidating but my only advice would be to JUST DO IT. At least once in a lifetime.

Safety is one of the major concerns, especially for girls travelling solo. Besides this, there are several other things to note while you are on the road by yourself.

For example, be constantly aware of your surroundings, keep in touch with your close ones so they know your whereabouts etc.

In this article, I am going to share 5 apps that can ease your anxiety related to solo travelling.

1. Meet Up

If it’s your first time travelling solo, you may hesitate to talk to new people, especially if they are from different nationalities.

Fret not! Download this app called MeetUp where you can find like-minded locals in every destination. If you go to remote/offbeat areas, this app may not be useful but a lot of popular destinations can be found on this app.

Get to know locals through this app and explore your destination with them.

A lot of times, this is how long-lasting friendships are built. Maybe you can host them in your city in the future too.
Other social apps for like-minded travellers include SoloTraveller, Backpackr , Travello and Couchsurfing. In the latter, you can also find hosts who can offer you free accommodation in return for cultural exchange or language exchange.

2. BonAppetour

Not sure what to do alone in a foreign place? This app got you covered.

You can find great in-home meals such as dinner parties, cooking classes, barbeques and picnics around you through this app.

That way, you get to meet new people and also have the best time with young solo travellers from across the world.

Another alternative to this is EatWith – a similar concept but more widespread.

The best part is that you get to meet local hosts who can introduce you to local cuisines. If you are a foodie, definitely download at least one of these apps on your travels.

You can choose your food preferences too – vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian etc.

3. Waze

Safety while travelling alone will always be a concern, if not for you then for your family and close friends.

The Waze app helps you with safe route options and gives you a heads up about traffic, and other such options.

If you are driving, Waze will also give you alerts for speed limits and tell you where the nearest and cheapest gas station is.

Other apps for safety include My Safety Pin, and Smart 24×7.

Also, I highly recommend you constantly share your live location with your family and friends while you are on the move.

4. Tripit

An easy way to track your itinerary is through TripIt. This app allows you to manage your bookings and transits in a structured manner. It is very user friendly and helps to create quick itineraries effortlessly.

Whether you are a spontaneous traveller or a planned traveller, this app works for both!
Another great app is Booking.com. Love how user-friendly this app is. Get exclusive deals on their app and save money.

5. Google Maps

This is a no-brainer. I rely heavily on Google Maps while travelling. Although it is not always good to rely on it every single time.

One of the main reasons to use Google Maps is the feature of offline maps. You can download an offline map of the destination and use it to easily navigate when you are in a no-wifi zone or when you don’t have internet outdoors.
You can also use MoovIt for the same.

All the above-mentioned apps are great for all kinds of travellers. But if you are travelling solo specifically, please make sure to check out these apps for sure.

Hope this helps.
